The Sensex opened on a negative note at 12100, down 30 points, tracking mix Asian indices. | | | The index pared some losses as trading progressed. The Sensex registered its high of 12272 for the day on buying in power and oil stocks. However, the market gave up its gains due to profit booking in heavyweights, realty, banking and metal stocks. The market witnessed panic selling towards the close and touched the day's low of 11899. The Sensex finally closed the session by shedding 178 points at 11953, while Nifty ended the session down 37 points at 3625. The broader market remained weak. Of the 2,613 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,320 stocks declined, 1,195 stocks advanced and 98 stocks ended unchanged. All the sectoral indices ended in the negative territory. The BSE Realty index dropped 3.74% at 2338, the BSE Banking index shed 2.94% at 6094 and the BSE Metal index was down 2.79% at 7535. Among the major losers, JP Associates dropped 6.41% at Rs137.90, HDFC slumped 5.94% at Rs1,748.55, DLF shed 5.51% at Rs245.95, Tata Steel lost 5.42% at Rs270.65, ICICI Bank declined 5.03% at Rs540.80 and Sterlite Industries slipped by nearly 5.02% at Rs454.80. However, National Thermal Power Corporation notched up gains of 1.91% at Rs194.50, Hindalco Industries rose 1.53% at Rs63.10, Tata Power added 1.24% at Rs912.65, Reliance Infrastructure advanced 1.24% at Rs801.45 and Bharti Airtel moved up by 1.07% at Rs756.15. Reality stocks came under sharp selling pressure. HDIL tumbled by 5.77% at Rs162.35, DLF slipped 5.51% at Rs245.95, Ansal Properties and Infrastructure slumped 5.11% at Rs33.40, Unitech fell 5.05% at Rs51.75, Anant Raj Industries lost 4.96% at Rs79.50, Phoenix Mills declined 3.63% at Rs110.25, Omaxe shed 3.06% at Rs57 and Parsvnath Developers was down 2.64% at Rs49.75. Over 3.38 crore Suzlon Energy shares changed hands on the BSE followed by Unitech (2.59 crore shares), Reliance Natural Resources (2.49 crore shares), Cals Refineries (2.12 crore shares) and IFCI (1.73 crore shares).
