Pull-back rally snaps
Heavy selling in metal scrips triggers a major sell-off and the Sensex snap the one-day-long pull-back rally.
The market cooled off today after gaining in the last session, which had lifted the Sensex above 12200. Selling commenced after the Sensex touched a new intra-day high of 12256 in early trades.   
Losing over 200 points by mid-morning, the market remained negative, but came close to erasing its losses in afternoon. However, the mood turned more bearish towards the close as selling in metal, information technology (IT), fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and public sector unit (PSU) stocks dragged the index around 11900 mark to an intra-day low of 11934. The Sensex wrapped the session 1.14% or 138 points down at 12020, while Nifty lost 46 points to close at 3635.

The market breadth was negative. Of the 2,581 scrips traded on the BSE, 1,336 stocks declined, whereas 1,154 stocks advanced. Ninety one stocks ended unchanged. Of the 13 sectoral indices, expect the BSE CD that closed marginally positive, all indices closed negative. The BSE Metal led the slump shedding 2% for the day. BSE IT, BSE FMCG, BSE PSU and BSE Oil lost over 1% each. 

Index heavyweight Tata Steel triggered a major sell-off in the market and the stock tumbled 3.67% to Rs265.35. Among other major losers, Sterlite Industries dropped 3.46% at Rs475.25, ONGC declined by 3.44% at Rs852.50, JP Associates lost 2.90% at Rs137.20, Maruti Suzuki India shed 2.67% at Rs837.75, State Bank of India slumped by 2.57% at Rs1,262.15, Mahindra & Mahindra slipped by 2.40% at Rs510.20 and Tata Consultancy Services dipped by 2.36% at Rs622.45. Reliance Communications, HDFC Bank, ITC, ICICI Bank, DLF and Hindustan Unilever lost over 1% each. However, ACC managed to report gains and moved up by 3.37% at Rs614.85 while HDFC added 3.03% at Rs1897.10, and Grasim Industries, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Hindalco Industries, Tata Motors, Reliance Infrastructure and Bharti Airtel gained 0.35-1% each.

Over 17.98 crore shares of DLF changed hands on the BSE followed by Cals refineries (2.43 crore shares), Unitech (2.22 crore shares), Suzlon Energy (2.17 crore shares) and Birla Power Solutions (1.74 crore shares)
