 Market Commentary
Late hour recovery on July series expiry
Buoyancy in heavyweights, information technology and mid-cap stocks in latter half lifts Sensex to the day's high of above 15400.
The market displayed a volatile trend almost for the entire session, despite expectations of unwinding of positions on the last day of the July series of derivative
contracts. The market witnessed correction in opening trades, as weak Asian markets and flat US and European indices dampened the sentiment. The Sensex resumed on a negative note at 15169 and slipped significantly in the afternoon with selling in heavyweight, oil and power stocks dragging the index to the day's low of 15065. However, recovery in information technology (IT), fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and banking stocks towards the close lifted the Sensex to the positive territory to touch the intra-day high of 15410. The Sensex finally ended the session with gains of 215 points at 15388, while Nifty added 58 points to close at 4571.

Among sectoral indices, BSE IT led the upsurge with gains of 2.80% followed by BSE FMCG (up 2.70%) and BSE Bankex (up 2.20%). However, BSE Teck, BSE Oil, BSE Power and BSE Metal closed in the negative territory. Interestingly, the market breadth was positive. Of the 2,758 scrips traded on the BSE 1,503 stocks advanced, 1,170 stocks declined and 85 stocks ended unchanged.

Out of the 30 Sensex stocks, 23 managed to end in the green while 7 stocks ended with losses. IT major Tata Consultancy Services was the lead gainer soaring 6.04% to Rs530 and Wipro advanced 4.68% to Rs488.55. Hindustan Unilever moved up 5.15% to Rs281.85, HDFC jumped 4.31% to Rs2,464.75, State Bank of India shot up by 4.01% to Rs1722.80, ICICI Bank added 3.14% to trade at Rs755.35 and HDFC Bank rose 2.95% to Rs1,459.80. Tata Steel, ITC and ACC gained marginally. Among laggards, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries dropped 3.62% to Rs1,145.25, Bharat Heavy Electricals shed 1.59% to trade at Rs2,202.70, Reliance Industries declined 1.37% to Rs1,899.90 and Hindalco Industries lost 0.74% to trade at Rs93.95.

Over 1.54 crore shares of Unitech changed hands on the BSE followed by Suzlon Energy (1.47 crore shares), Mahindra Satyam (1.14 crore shares), Ispat Industries (1.10 crore shares) and Ruchi Soya (1.08 crore shares).
