Realty up amidst volatility
While selling pressure saw most stocks slip from higher levels, reality stocks held on to their gains to end firm.
The market failed to hold on to its first-half gains and buckled under sustained selling pressure in noon trades, with the index gyrating by a huge 371 points during intra-day trades.  
Shrugging off the weak US and European indices, the Sensex took a cue from mix Asian indices in early trades and rallied sharply on buying support and resumed 20 points over the last close of 14493. However, the ongoing bearish trend pulled the market down with the index plunging deep into the red to touch an intra-day low of 14355, down 138 points from the last close. The Sensex managed to recover all losses towards the afternoon session and on substantial buying in realty stocks touched the intra-day high of 14727. The session closed above 14600-mark at 14645, up 152 points, while Nifty advanced 50 points to close at 4341.

The market breadth was negative, with losers outpacing the gainers by 1.06:1 on the BSE. Of the 2,673 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,339 stocks declined, whereas 1,255 stocks advanced. Seventy nine stocks ended unchanged. Barring BSE CD, rest of the indices recovered from their early loss and ended firm. BSE realty gained sharply and advanced by 4.24% followed by BSE Teck (up 1.56%), BSE Bankex (up 1.33%) and BSE Auto (up 1.26%).

Several index heavyweights ended with sharp gains. DLF led the chart and advanced nearly 4.76% to Rs325.60. Mahindra & Mahindra gained 3.16% to Rs714.35, Reliance Infrastructure advanced 2.99% to Rs1,233.30, Reliance Communications moved up 2.98% to Rs298.55, Tata Motors advanced 2.80% to Rs299.30, Bharti Airtel advanced 2.58% to Rs822.80, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries soared by 2.51% at Rs1,118.30 and State Bank of India was up 2.17% to Rs1,779.80. Select counters, however, logged steady gains. Hindustan Unilever rose 2.10% at Rs272.70, JP Associates added 1.68% to Rs208.50, Reliance Industries gained 1.68% to Rs2,057.35 and Infosys Technologies moved up by 1.11% at Rs1,796.70. While Hindalco Industries, ONGC, ACC, Tata Power and Grasim Industries closed in negative territory with marginal loss of 0.23-3% each.

Over 2.05 crore shares of Unitech changed hands on the BSE followed by Ispat Industries (1.89 crore shares), Suzlon Energy (1.87 crore shares), NIIT (1.70 crore shares) and Reliance Natural Resources (1.54 crore shares).
