 Market Commentary
Auto stocks carry the day
While selling pressure saw most other stocks slip from higher levels, auto stocks held on to their gains to end firm.
The market recovered most of the day?s losses (of about 40 points in early trades from the previous day's close of 15398) towards the close of the session.
Tracking weak global indices, the Sensex opened marginally above its previous close. The mood remained bearish and the market slipped on profit booking in index pivotals, consumer durable and Teck stocks. The market once again witnessed selling pressure and the Sensex touched the day's low of 15359 by afternoon amid choppy session. However, the index recovered shrugging off the weakness on substantial buying in auto, metal and capital goods stocks towards the close and touched the day?s high of 15741. The Sensex finally closed at 15689, up 291 points, while Nifty ended 87 points up at 4680.

Of the 2,831 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,576 stocks advanced, whereas 1,162 stocks declined. Ninety-three stocks ended unchanged. All the 13 sectoral indices were up. BSE Auto, the auto index, was the top gainer flaring up by 2.88% followed by BSE Metal (up 2.76%), BSE CG (up 2.29%) and BSE Oil & Gas (up 2.16%). Other indices were up 1% each.

Of the 30 Sensex stocks, Mahindra & Mahindra was the chart buster soaring by 6.21% to Rs863.90. Among other stocks, Hero Honda Motors advanced 4.20% to Rs1,609.20, Sterlite Industries jumped by 3.86% to Rs670.45, while Larsen & Toubro, HDFC, ONGC, ITC, Grasim Industries, ACC, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, Reliance Infrastructure, Hindalco Industries, Tata Power and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries closed with gains of 2% each. Among laggards, Tata Motors slipped 0.31% to Rs508.20 and Tata Consultancy Services shed 0.23% to quote at Rs531.75.

Over 3.84 crore shares of IFCI changed hands on the BSE followed by NHPC (3.75 crore shares), Unitech (1.89 crore shares), Suzlon Energy (1.56 crore shares) and Ispat Industries (1.11 crore shares).
