Post-market: Sensex jubilant, ends week with 4% gains

However, the Indian markets on most | | | occasion has ignored global cues and has moved altogether in different directions and today was no exception. For the start of the days trading, Sensex ignored the weak global cues and staged a strong performance and gaining strength throughout the day. The Asian indices posted a mixed bag performance with Shanghai Composite, Hang Seng, Strait Times closing the day with marginal losses, while Taiwan Weighted and Nikkei 225 ended the day with marginal gains. The Sensex ignored such global cues and ended the day with decent gains of 128 points or 74 basis points. However, in today's trade, European indices (FTSE 100) that had opened strong are currently trading marginally lower at 5217, which is about five points lower than the previous closing. Today the markets bucked the global trend, as the Sensex opened at 17197, two points higher than the previous closing. However, it started gaining strength thereafter and ended the day with decent gains owing to the heavy buying in the realty and banking space. During the day the Sensex went to hit the high of 17348, however it closed at 17323, up 128 points, while the Nifty rose by 33 points to end the day at 5142. The Singapore Nifty closed 48 points higher than its previous day?s closing settlement price. The market breadth was positive as out of 2,865 stocks traded on the Bombay Stock Exchage (BSE), 1,506 stocks advanced, 1,264 stocks declined and 95 stocks ended unchanged. Among the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index surged the most with gains of 3.36%, followed by BSE Bankex that rose by 2.29%. BSE Oil & Gas Index jumped 1.19%. Among the sectoral losers, BSE Auto Index fell the most with a loss of 1.26% while the BSE Metal Index slumped by 1.10%. On the stocks front, EIH topped the gainers? list on the BSE and surged the most by 9.87% to Rs149.70, followed by Rashtriya Chemical that rose by 9.21% to Rs73.50. Banks like UCO Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Union Bank of India and State Bank of India rose by over 5% each. Realty stocks like DLF and Lanco InftraTech also gained over 5% each. Even Biocon, Bhushan Steel and Rei Agro ended the day with gains of over 5% each. Among the losers, Sterlite Industries fell the most by 5.44% to Rs820.90, followed by Bajaj Auto, Sun Pharmaceuticals, IRB Infrastructure all of which declined by over 3% each.
