Today, the Asian markets recovered its Friday?s losses and closed in green with strong gains in the range of 0.93-3.25% each. Only Straits Times closed negative with loss of 1.09%, while SGX Nifty closed 69 points higher. US stock futures were up marginally in early trades. Indian indices After two days of losses, the domestic indices rebound today to post gains of 1.77% as the Asian markets and metal stocks surges. The Sensex that opened with gains of 24 points never saw that level again in the day and went to hit the high of 17027. However, the weak European opening made Sensex to close slightly lower at 16926, well below the 17K levels. Nifty closed at 5033, higher by 1.84%. Sensex sentiment Advancing shares far outnumbered declining stocks. Of the 2,832 stocks traded on the BSE, 2,054 stocks advanced, whereas 710 stocks declined. Sixty-eight stocks closed unchanged. Sectoral & stock screening The Bulls helped all the 13 sector indices on BSE to close higher, with BSE Metal (up 3.66%) and BSE TECk (up 2.55%) being the top performers. Other indices recorded gains of 0.73-2.10% each. On the stocks? front, GMDC surged the most by 10.38.%, followed by Hindustan Zinc that rose by 7.84%. CESC and Tulip Telecom were up by over 6% each. Among losers, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals slid the most by 4.60% followed by Dabur India that was down by 2.59%. Viewing volumes On stock turnover front, over 2.27 crore shares of Suzlon Energy changed hands on BSE followed by IFCI (1.62 crore shares), Unitech (1.08 crore shares), GMDC (0.58 crore shares) and HDIL (0.50 crore shares). Today's major news - ONGC finds new oil reserve in Gujarat; the stock rises 2.64%.
- Wockhardt, DBS agree to out-of-court settlement; Wockhardt?s stock closed 2.42% higher.
- Jay Shree Tea & Industries close to buying tea estate in Africa; the stock surges 3.09%.
- Srei Infrastructure Finance may junk external commercial borrowing (ECB) plan; the stock ends the day 3.30% higher.
- Shriram EPC and a China firm form a joint venture for power projects; the stock jumps 4.05%.
