 Market Commentary 
Sensex closes flat, remains choppy
On the day when global cues turned marginally negative, Sensex ends flat sustaining 17K level on buying in IT stocks.
Global signals
After four consecutive days of gain, European stocks opened lower as banking stocks plunged. All the major European indices were trading in red at the time of 
 
writing this report with FTSE 100 trading 21 points lower at 5362. Major Asian indices bar Sensex, Shanghai Composite and Jakarta Composite that opened weak failed to recover the losses. SGX Nifty that opened strong ended the highly volatile day with marginal gains of 9 points. 

The traders in the US market will focus on the data related to PPI, net long-term TIC flow, capacity utilization and industrial production that will be announced today.  


Indian indices
Sensex ended the choppy day with marginal gains of 18 points or 0.11% higher. On the back of weak performance by Asian indices and sombre opening in European markets, Sensex stayed in red for the most part of the day. However, due to the consistent buying in information technology (IT) stocks, Sensex bounced back, recovered all the losses and ended flat.

The bellwether slipped below 17K level, remained range-bound and swung 197 points in the day. Sensex that opened mere 4 points higher at 17036 soon slumped to see the low of 16883. However it went to make the high of 17080 before flat closing at 17051, higher by 0.11% or 18 points. Today, the Nifty managed to stay above 5000-level all through the day and ended the session at 5062, up by 4 points.

Sensex sentiment
The number of advancing shares on the BSE was almost at par with the declining ones. Of the 2,808 stocks traded, where 1,329 stocks advanced 1,389 stocks declined. Ninety stocks closed unchanged. 

Sectoral & stock screening
Of the 13 sectoral indices on the BSE eight ended higher while five ended lower. Of the eight advancing indices, only two, BSE IT that was up by 2.02% and BSE TECk that rose over 1.01%, showed perceptible gains while the remaining six--BSE CD, BSE Metal, BSE Bankex, BSE CG, BSE Power and BSE HCL Technologies-- posted marginal gains. Of the five losing indices, BSE Realty topped the list posting losses of 1.19% to be followed by BSE Oil & Gas that slid by 0.71%. The remaining three--BSE PSU, BSE FMCG and BSE Auto--closed marginally lower.

On stocks? front, Reliance Capital topped the chart of advancing shares being up by 6.69%, followed by Spice Communications that gained over 5.53% and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals that rose by 5.37% for the day. Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation, Sintex Industries and Chambal Fertilisers rose by over 4% each. Among the losers, HDIL slid the most by 3.08%, followed by IVRCL Infrastructure that fell by 2.83%. Hindustan Copper declined by over 2.58%.

Viewing volumes
On turnover front, Over 1.45 crore shares of Suzlon Energy changed hands on the BSE followed by Unitech (0.73 crore shares), Reliance Natural Resources (0.48 crore shares).

  • Bharat Forge plans Rs50,000-crore investment; the stock ends 1.68% higher.

  • Shoppers Stop plans to invest Rs250 crore: the stock ends 0.88% higher.

  • Mahindra Satyam and Gen-i announce strategic alliance; Mahindra Satyam?s stock closed 2.06% lower.
