Market for breather; measly up
After rallying for five consecutive days, the benchmark indices take a breather and end the lacklustre session with marginal gains

Indian indices
Bulls took a breather today as the Indian markets ended the lacklustre session with small gains. The domestic market expanded its winning streak for the sixth consecutive day owing to healthy global cues and encouraging advance tax payments by top Indian firms.

The Sensex opened with a positive bias, 37 points up at 17500 on the back of rally in the global markets. The Sensex struck day?s high of 17530 within few minutes of trade. The index traded volatile throughout the day. The Sensex came off from the higher level and slipped in to the red in the mid-afternoon session to hit the day?s low of 17407 on lower US index futures. The Sensex staged a turnaround after the European markets posted smart gains.

At the closing bell, the Sensex finished the session 50 points higher at 17463 and the Nifty signed off the day at 5233, 11 points up.

Market sentiment
The market breadth was positive. Of the 2,969 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,497 stocks gained, whereas 1,345 stocks trailed. Hundred and twenty seven stocks closed unchanged.

Viewing volumes
Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) firm ? Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) saw highest trading with over 3.50 crore shares changing hands on the BSE, India's second largest listed cellular services provider by sales ?Reliance Communications (0.90 crore shares), industrial finance company ? IFCI (0.70 crore shares), India?s second largest developer ? Unitech (0.62 crore shares) and ADAG power utility ? Reliance Power (0.50 crore share).

Sectoral & stock screening
The 13 sector indices had almost perfect split ? seven closed higher, six ended lower. BSE Auto topped the gainers? list, up by 1.29% and BSE information technology (IT) surged by 0.82%. On the flip side, BSE PSU lost by 0.64%. Remaining indices ended either up or down marginally.

Among ?A? group stocks, the top gainers for the day ? Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) surged the most by 9.87% after an increase in its user base, followed by Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) that rose by 6.64% and Bosch that was up by 6.83%. 

The top losers for the day ?Syndicate Bank slid the most by 4.63%, followed by MMTC that declined by 4.10% and Koutons Retails that shed 2.97%. 


Global signals
European shares extended its winning streak on the sixth straight day as banks gains. As of writing this report, FTSE 100 was trading at 0.38% higher.

All the major Asian indices closed in the positive territory. Shanghai Composite (China) and Hang Seng (Hong Kong) indices were closed today. SGX Nifty ended 6.50 points lower.

The US stock index futures signal lower opening on the Wall Street on Wednesday. Investor will keep an eye on various data for the month of May related to ? housing starts and permits, producer price index (PPI) and industrial production and capacity utilisation.
