| Indian indices The domestic markets fell to the lowest level in three weeks, led by software exporters after International Business Machines (IBM) reported a drop in new contracts. The markets nosedived in the last one-hour after trading flat throughout the day. The markets witnessed immense volatility in today?s trade. The sell-off in technology, realty, capital goods, power, oil & gas exploration, select financial and metal companies' shares pulled the Sensex below 20000 mark in last hour of trade, for the first time since September 29, 2010. Infosys Technologies, the nation?s second-biggest software-services exporter, retreated by 3.1%. IBM, the world?s largest computer-services provider, yesterday said service contracts dropped by 7% in its third quarter. Tata Consultancy Services lost by 1.7%. The Sensex started the session at 20298, higher by 130 points. The index remained flat amid volatility throughout the morning session. In the afternoon session, the Sensex witnessed a high degree of volatility. In late trades, the index declined sharply and breached the 20000 levels, hitting the day?s low of 19924 as selling intensified in IT and realty stocks along with index heavyweights. | Market Outlook: Tonight in the US, we have results from Bank of America and Goldman Sachs along with Dow components Johnson & Johnson and Coke and Google's poor cousin Yahoo. Bank of Canada makes a rate decision tonight, which may impact the US dollar. On economic data, we have building permits and housing starts data. | At the finishing line, the Sensex closed at 19983, down by 186 points. The Nifty shut lower by 49 points at 6027. Bond and Rupee update: India?s ten-year bonds dropped for a fourth day on concerns that the central bank will increase interest rates at its policy review next month to cool inflation. India?s rupee weakened for a second day on speculation that inflows of overseas capital will slow after Coal India completes the nation?s biggest initial share sale on October 21, 2010. Market sentiment The market breadth stood at par as falling stocks were in same line with that of rising ones. On the BSE, out of the 3,079 stocks, 1,486 declined while 1,479 gained. Hundred and fourteen stocks remained unchanged. Viewing volumes Wind turbine major - Suzlon Energy was traded the most, with over 0.71 crore shares changing hands on the BSE, followed by Indian shipbuilding company - Pipavav Shipyard (0.48 crore shares), pharma major - Biocon (0.43 crore shares), industrial finance company - IFCI (0.36 crore shares) and India's second largest developers - Unitech (0.27 crore shares). | Sectoral & stock screening Of the 13 sector indices, three closed higher while ten closed lower. Among gainers, BSE Health Care (HC) surged the most by 1.06%, while BSE Auto and BSE Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) rose by 0.28% and 0.06% respectively. Among losers, BSE IT slid by 2.22%, followed by BSE Realty that declined by 1.75% and BSE TECk fell by 1.73%. Looking into 'A' group stocks, the toppers were - Biocon up by 12.97% as the company entered into a strategic partnership with Pfizer, Pipava Shipyard rose by 5.67% and Jain Irrigation jumped by 5.53%. |  | | | | The losers were - Petronet LNG slid by 3.93%, Sesa Goa dropped by 3.60% and Alstom Projects fell by 3.29%. | | | | Global signals The European shares traded marginally higher as banking stocks led the gainers? pack ahead of Goldman Sachs results offsetting weak technology stocks on downbeat earnings from Apple. All the major Asian markets shut in the positive terrain except Kospi index that closed lower by 0.97%. The US stock index futures point to a lower start on the Wall Street. Earnings of Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Yahoo, Coca Cola and Johnson & Johnson will be in focus.
