Global woes weaken markets; BSE, NSE fall 1% 

Key indices edged lower on concerns the US Fed Reserve may soon end its monetary stimulus while weak economic data from Germany and China dampened market sentiment. Sensex, Nifty down 1% for the week ended Oct 10

Indian indices:

Welcome to the 'Weekly Market Wrap' for October 10, 2014 where key indices ended lower for the third straight week amid selling by foreign funds on worries that the US Federal Reserve may soon end its monetary stimulus while weak economic data from Germany and China also dampened market sentiment. Key indices fell in three out of four trading sessions of truncated trading week.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 66.99 points or 0.7% to settle at 9,444.41 and S&P BSE Small-Cap index lost 30.82 points or 0.28% to settle at 10,611.

The S&P BSE Sensex, dropped 270.61 points or 1.01% to settle at 26,297.38 in the week ended Friday, (October 10, 2014) while Nifty shed 85.60 points or 1.07% to settle at 7,859.95.

Weekly market trend from October 07 - October 10:

Oct 07: The BSE Sensex fell for a second straight session on Tuesday, marking their lowest closing level in nearly two months, as cyclical stocks such as Hindalco Industries declined ahead of the earnings season.

Oct 08: Markets fell for 3rd straight session on Wednesday to their lowest closing level in nearly 2-mths as software stocks slumped after Citigroup downgraded certain companies including Infosys ahead of its results on Friday.

Oct 09: Benchmark rose after three sessions of losses on Thursday on hopes that US Federal Reserve would not rush into raising interest rates sparked a rally in global markets and boosted blue-chips such as ICICI Bank.

Oct 10: Key Indices posted their biggest fall in 2-1/2 weeks on Friday, as blue-chips continued to be hit by concerns that weaker global markets would dent demand from foreign investors, although Infosys surged after a profit beat.

Global indices:
Top Gainers: Shanghai Composite up 1.14% and Hang Seng up 0.10% 

Top Losers: CAC 40 down 4.86%, NASDAQ down 4.45%, Dax 100 down 4.42% and FTSE 100 down 2.88%.

Sectoral and stock screening:
Top Gainers: S&P BSE Power up 2.02%, S&P BSE Oil & Gas up 1.81% and S&P BSE Realty up 1.33%.

Top Loser: S&P BSE HC down 4.17 %, S&P BSE Metal down 3.79% and S&P BSE FMCG down 2.44%.


 

Looking at the 'A' group stocks, the top three gainers of the week were - NCC up by 15.20%, Jet Airways up by 15.05% and Page Industries up by 12.60%

Top three losers of the week were - Kailash Auto Finance down by 13.56%, PVR down by 9.88% and Natco Pharma down by 9.17%.

FII/MF activity
The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been the net sellers of the Indian stocks to the tune of Rs1215.70 crore as on October 09, 2014 and the domestic investors bought Indian shares worth a net of Rs1379.3 crore as on October 09, 2014.

Market Outlook for the coming week! 
The Q2 September 2014 earnings season is underway and it will continue until mid-November 2014.

The government will release the CPI data for September 2014 at 5:30 PM on Monday, (September 13, 2014).

The government will release the inflation data based WPI at 12 noon on Tuesday, (October 14, 2014).

State run oil marketing companies (PSU OMCs), auto and airline stocks will be in focus as PSU OMCs will review fuel prices on Thursday, (October 16, 2014).

Meanwhile, Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana will be conducted on a single day on Wednesday, (October 15,2014). Counting of votes will take place on Sunday, (October 19, 2014).
