The benchmark index gained some momentum | | | in the morning trades but after exhibiting some volatile moves the index slipped into the red again on heavy selling in information technology (IT) stocks. The Sensex touched the day's low of 13834, down 450 points from the previous close. The resumption of buying in the afternoon saw the Sensex move into the positive territory. It gained strength on the back of solid buying in reality stocks and touched the intraday high of 14930, up 647 points from the previous close. But towards the end of the day, lack of buying interest caused the market to pare all the gains and the Sensex closed the session on a flat note with a gain of 18 points at 14302. The Nifty closed the session down five points at 4318. The market breadth was positive. Of the 2,714 stocks that traded on the BSE, 1,927 stocks advanced, 739 stocks declined and 48 stocks ended unchanged. Most of the sectoral indices ended in the green. The BSE Reality Index gained 12.80% at 3348.76 followed by the BSE Bankex (up 6.84% at 8118.36), the BSE CG Index (up 6.33% at 11245.89), the BSE Auto Index (up 3.64% at 4313.90), the BSE Power Index (up 3.18% at 2706.02), the BSE Metal Index (up 3.02% at 9415.92), the BSE PSU Index (up 2.65% at 7215.74) and the BSE CD Index (up 0.88% at 2293.93). While the BSE IT Index led the laggards with a loss of 12.80% at 3348.76, the BSE Teck Index, HC Index, FMCG Index and Oil Index closed in negative territory with a loss of 3-5% each. Among the Sensex stocks, reality major DLF was the leading gainer after it soared 19.36% to Rs384.70. Among the other major Sensex gainers are SBI, which advanced 11.19% to Rs1,754.45; Reliance Communications, which jumped 10.54% to Rs315.70; and Grasim Industries, which shot up by 9.50% to Rs2,289.40. Mahindra and Mahindra, Larsen and Toubro, Maruti, ICICI Bank, ACC and Reliance Infrastructure closed with gains. Among the laggards Infosys tumbled 11.65% to Rs1,563.75, Wipro shed 9.13% at Rs385.90, TCS declined by 8.15% at Rs672.15, Ranbaxy lost 6.40% at Rs209.75, ITC moved down 5.63% at Rs190.40 and Reliance lost 5.25% at Rs2,235.40. Over 10.26 crore Cals Refinery shares changed hands on the BSE followed by Unitech (4.40 crore shares), IFCI (3.39 crores shares), Reliance Natural Resources (3.03 crore shares) and DLF (2.40 crore shares).
