The bounce-back came after a steep fall of over 300 points since the downslide began since last two days. Earlier, in the first half, the market was positive and remained range bound in early trades after opening firm. The change of guard to firm bullish sentiment came in noon trades, as strong buying in banking, capital goods, consumer durables, teck and information technology stocks spurred the index to an intra-day high of 12220. The Sensex finally ended the session with gains of 2.53% or 301 points at 12173 whereas Nifty soared 78 points at 3672. The breadth of the market was positive with gainers to losers ratio standing at 1,472:1068. One hundred two stocks ended unchanged. All the sectoral indices were back in action and moved up sharply. The BSE Bankex Index was the major gainer and rose 3.86%. The BSE CG Index jumped 3.57%, the BSE CD Index added 3.18%, the BSE TECk Index gained 3.05% and the BSE IT Index was up 2.47%. Market banked on banking stocks today. Oriental Bank at Rs143.45 and ICICI Bank at Rs574.45 flared up nearly 7% each. While Bank of India rose 4.72% at Rs246.05, Federal Bank scaled up 3.88% at Rs192.80. State Bank of India, Axis Bank, Indian Overseas, Canara Bank and Punjab National Bank spurted 2-3% each. Among other majors, Ranbaxy Laboratories rose 8.59%, Grasim Industries shot up by 4.96% at Rs1,881.60 and Bharti Airtel advanced 4.68% at Rs799.80. Larsen & Toubro, Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC, Wipro and DLF flared up 3-4% each. Over 3.67 crore shares of Cals Refineries changed hands on the BSE followed by Cairn India (1.95 crore shares), Unitech (1.71 crore shares), Suzlon Energy (1.14 crore shares) and Reliance Natural Resources (80 lakh shares).
