Indices across Asia also witnessed a major correction and shed around 1-3% each. The market started to deteriorate by mid-morning trades, after a rebound from a weak opening saw the Sensex breach the 11900 levels and touch an intra-day high of 11936 in early trades. While the market steadily kept losing momentum, widespread selling in afternoon nearly dragged the index below 11700 to the day's low of 11696. The Sensex managed to erase 177 points towards the close and ended the session at 11873, down 147 points. The Nifty declined by 42 points to close at 3593. On the BSE, the number of declining shares stood at 1,213 stocks, whereas 1,263 stocks advanced for the day. Seventy eight stocks remained changed. Of the 13 sectoral indices, most were battered. The BSE Oil & Gas index dropped 1.54% followed by the BSE Teck index (down 1.32%), the BSE CG index (down 1.14%), the BSE Metal index (down 0.98%), the BSE Bankex index (down 0.66%) and the BSE IT index (down 0.38%). Out of the 30 Sensex stocks only eight managed to end in the green. Among the major losers, Sterlite Industries tanked 5.52% at Rs449. Bharti Airtel slumped 4.13% at Rs764.05, Tata Motors shed 3.04% at Rs260.15, Wipro crumbled by 2.78% at Rs2.78, Larsen & Toubro dropped 2.55% at Rs947.20, ONGC slipped 2.43% at Rs831.80, ICICI Bank plunged 2.36% at Rs536.70 and Grasim Industries fell by 0.59% at Rs1,792.65. Other front-line stocks also declined by around 0.50% each. However, DLF bucked the downtrend and advanced by 7.18% at Rs249.20 and Ranbaxy Laboratories inched up 3.66% to close at Rs184.
