 Market Commentary
Market cools, sheds 129 points
Weakness in heavyweights, information technology (IT) and power stocks saw the Sensex shed 129 points during the day.
A day after the Sensex gained over 450 points on sustained all-round buying, the market was range-bound during intra-day trades. After adding 40 points to yesterday's close,
the market soon eased and slipped further in afternoon, as investors tracked weak Asian indices and remained concerned over foreign and domestic fund outflows from the market. Selling in information technology, power and public sector undertakings triggered a major sell-off and the Sensex tumbled below 15000-mark to touch the day's low of 14956. However, select buying towards the close saw the Sensex pare some losses and end the session at 15062, down 129 points, while the Nifty shed 33 points to close at 4469.

The market breadth was marginally weak. Of the 2,718 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,343 stocks declined, 1,289 stocks advanced and 86 stocks ended unchanged. Among the sectoral indices the BSE IT, the IT index, shed 1.74%, while BSE Power declined 1.70%. BSE Metal, BSE Auto and BSE HC were the gainers and moved up marginally.

Select heavyweights declined sharply on strong selling pressure. Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) tanked 4.54% to Rs477.40, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) dropped 2.67% to Rs2,214.90, Mahindra & Mahindra fell 2.59% to Rs776.25, ITC shed 2.53% to Rs219.75, ACC lost 2.51% to Rs824.45, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) declined 2.48% to Rs202.65, Tata Power dipped 2.35% to Rs1,128.90 and Sterlite Industries slumped 2.32% to Rs595.85. DLF, ICICI Bank, Infosys Technologies, ONGC and Bharti Airtel shed over 1% each. Among the select gainers Tata Steel advanced 5.28% to Rs411.75, Maruti Suzuki India added 2.62% at Rs106, Hindustan Unilever gained 1.12% to trade at Rs269.80 and JP Associates was up 1.08% to Rs225.50.

Over 94.75 lakh shares of Tata Steel changed hands on the BSE followed by JP Associates (49 lakh shares), Reliance Communications (32 lakh shares), DLF (32 lakh shares) and Hindalco Industries (23 lakh shares).
