 Market Commentary
Slightly up amidst volatility
Sensex ends with modest gains, witnessing an intra-day 278 points swing.
The stock market witnessed strong volatility, swinging 278 points during intra-day trades, as shares gyrated sharply between zones. Taking cue from mixed global
indices, the Sensex started on a positive note at 15882, but failed to sustain its gains, as a sharp bout of profit-taking pulled the index below 15700 mark to an intra-day low of 15695. While the market remained lacklustre with a negative bias, the Sensex rolled back to the green by mid-noon trades on renewed buying support and surged to an intra-day high of 15973. However, a fresh round of profit-taking towards the fag end saw the Sensex pare its gains and end at 15904, up only 73 points, while Nifty added 14 points to close at 4694.

The market breadth was positive. Of the 2,767 stocks traded on the BSE 1,611 stocks advanced, whereas 1,062 stocks declined. Ninety four stocks remained unchanged. Among sectoral indices, BSE Bankex gained 2.11%, while BSE OIL, the BSE IT and BSE Teck also ended at higher levels. BSE Realty, BSE Auto and BSE FMCG lost around 1-2% each.

Select heavyweights edged higher on decent buying support. ONGC rose 4.50% to Rs1,192.40, Wipro jumped 3.25% to Rs498.05, ACC advanced 2.74% to Rs924.90, Infosys Technologies added 2.49% to Rs2,094.55, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries gained 2.01% to Rs1,182.30 and Reliance Infrastructure gained 1.98% to Rs1,212.30. However, select frontline stocks came under selling pressure. Maruti Suzuki India was the major loser and dropped 3.10% to Rs1,440.95. Hindalco Industries declined 1.86% to Rs110.85, DLF dropped 1.74% to Rs391.40 and HDFC Bank shed 1.54% to trade at Rs1,447.555.

Mahindra Satyam was the most actively traded share on the BSE with over 2.96 crore shares changing hands to be followed by Ispat Industries (2.85 crore shares), Firstsource Solutions (2.29 crore shares), Unitech (1.53 crore shares) and Suzlon Energy (1.06 crore shares).
