 Market Commentary
Market upbeat
Market trims gains but ends firm above 16100-mark.
The market displayed positive trend almost for the entire session. Taking cue from firm Asian indices, as US market was closed yesterday on account of
labour day, the Sensex opened 15 points higher at 16030 and rallied to touch the day's high of 16232 on buying in metal and oil & gas stocks. The market thereafter remained range-bound though with positive bias. However, profit booking in some front-line stocks dragged the market to its intra-day low of 16031. Towards the close the Sensex bounced back, as short covering in heavyweights helped the index to recover and end the session at 16124, up 107 points. Nifty was at 4805 at closing bell, up 22 points.

Declining shares outnumbered advancing shares today. Of the total 2,889 stocks traded on BSE, where 1,461 stocks declined, 1,362 stocks advanced. Sixty six stocks ended unchanged. Broadly speaking, metal and oil & gas stocks posted gains while consumer durables, banking and capital goods stocks posted marginal gains. FMCG bourses posted losses for the day. Remaining sectors were down, though marginally.

Heavyweights witnessed strong buying interest. Aluminium giant Hindalco industries soared 6.05% to Rs114.85, India?s largest copper maker Sterlite Industries rose 4.78% to Rs740.30, India?s largest bank State Bank of India was up by 4.36% to Rs1,894.15, Reliance Industries jumped 3.73% to Rs2,075.15, Reliance Infrastructure added 3.72% to trade at Rs1,204.30, steel major Tata Steel gained 3.24% to Rs456.15 and two-wheeler maker Hero Honda Motors moved up 2.26% to Rs1,668.55. However, Tata Power slipped 3.07% to Rs1280.60, FMCG major Hindustan Unilever lost 2.66% to quote at Rs266.70, auto major Mahindra & Mahindra lost 2.39% to trade at Rs838.80, Reliance Communications moved down 2.16% to Rs1,521.55.

NHPC was most traded share with over 2.21 crore shares changing hands on the BSE followed by Ispat Industries (2.15 crore shares), Unitech (1.87 crore shares), Suzlon Energy (1.53 crore shares) and IFCI (1.53 crore shares).
