Sensex below 17000, slides by 219 points
Indian market falls for the fourth day on the trot on the back of weak performance of the global indices and heavy selling in realty stocks.
There was bloodshed on the Dalal Street, as the Sensex breached a significant level of 17000 and the Nifty fell below 5000. When all the global indices turned  
negative, the Sensex fell in line and lost 219 points for the day. Today all the Asian indices declined sharply and recorded a fall in the range of 0.48-1.76% each. At the time of writing the report FTSE 100 was trading at 5190, 68 points below its previous close. The Singapore Nifty lost 85 points in today's session. Such a weak performance by the global indices dragged the Sensex down and the bellwether traded in a negative zone for the entire day. Heavy selling pressure in realty, capital goods (CG), consumer durables (CD) and banking stocks in the closing hours made the Sensex slide further and close 1.29% below its yesterday?s closing. The US markets today will be closely watching the data's that will get released today that includes weekly jobless claims, August home prices m/m, August home prices y/y and September leading economic indicators.

The Sensex again opened with marginal gains, however it slipped down in the red immediately thereafter. The Sensex opened at 17031, 22 points above its yesterday?s close and immediately slipped into the negative zone and ended the day with a loss of 1.29% amid the heavy selling in realty, CG, CD and banking space doubled with weak European markets? opening and feeble Asian markets? closing. The Sensex today breached the 17000-level to hit the low of 16721, while it closed at 16790 down by 219 points. While Nifty declined by 75 points to end the day at 4989. The market breadth was very negative as out of 2,825 stocks traded on the BSE ? 1,875 stocks declined, whereas 871 stocks advanced. Seventy nine stocks closed unchanged.

Among the sectoral indices only BSE FMCG, BSE IT and BSE TECk closed in green with marginal gains. While all the remaining sectoral indices closed in red. BSE Realty fell the most by 4.59%, followed by BSE CG that was down by 2.69% and BSE CD that declined by 2.65%. BSE Bankex lost 2.05%. On the stocks? front, Marico surged by 3.78% to Rs101.65, followed by Ashok Leyland that rose by 2.21% to Rs43.90 and Infosys Technologies was up by 2.13% to Rs2211.50. Hindustan Copper, ITC, KSK Energy, Hindustan Unilever, Bank of India, GMDC, Balrampur Chini, Yes Bank, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra, Cairns and Adani Enterprises ended the day with gains of over 1% each. Among the losers, Jaiprakash Associates fell the most by 6.84% to Rs238.20, followed by IRB Infrastructure that fell by 6.44% to Rs235.20, while stocks like IVRCL Infrastructure, Madras Cements, HDIL, Unitech, Shriram Transport and Lanco Infratech declined by over 5% each.

On turnover front, Over 2.03 crore shares of KSK Energy changed hands on the BSE followed by Unitech (1.05 crore shares), Ispat Industries (1.04 crore shares), GVK Power & Infrastructure (1.03 crore shares) and Jaiprakash Associates (0.62 crore shares).

Events outcome

  • The net profit of Rolta India rose by 71.48% to Rs76.55 crore.
  • Piramal Healthcare's net profit grew by 44.8% to Rs106.2 crore.
  • Larsen & Toubro's profit after tax rises by 26% to Rs580.40 crore.
  • Allahabad Bank's net profit rises by 700.36%.
  • Biocon's net profit rises 85.98%.

Astral Poly Technik's ex-date for interim dividend - The stock closed at Rs14.95, down by 2.61% on the BSE and at Rs14.90 down by 3.25% on the NSE.
