At the time of writing this report, FTSE 100 is trading at 5319 | | | up 0.16%, CAC 40 at 3849 up 0.23% and DAX gains 0.37% at 5806. | Among major Asian indices Kospi, Shanghai Composite, Nikkei and Hang Seng closed in red while Jakarta closed in green. US stock futures opened firm as investors consider some developments concerning the nation's employment picture. Indian indices After four days of consolidation Nifty staged strong performance and closed just below 5150 level. Buying across all the sectors led the Sensex rally over 240 points for the day. The markets were volatile in the first half but witnessed huge buying interest in the last couple of hours led by heavyweights--Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, Infosys Technologies, DLF, National Thermal Power Corporation and ITC. Positive European cues also helped the markets a bit. The Sensex opened two points high; the day?s high was 17238 and the day?s low was 16964. At closing bell, the Sensex was at 17228, 245 points higher. Nifty closed 81 points higher at 5148. Sensex sentiment The market breadth was negative. Of 2,894 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,865 stocks advanced, whereas 951 stocks advanced. 78 stocks closed unchanged. Sectoral & stock screening All the 13 sectors did well for the day. Bar BSE HC, BSE Auto and BSE PSU that posted marginal gains, the remaining 10 indices ended with perceptible changes. BSE Reality recorded the higher gains of 3.27% followed by BSE CD that advanced by 2.29% and BSE Metal that went up by 2.15%. The remaining indices gained 1% each. Talking of shares, Bharti Airtel surged the most by 4.05% followed by DLF that rose by 3.53%. Tata Motors, Hindalco Industries, Reliance Industries, Jai Prakash Associates, Reliance Communications and Tata Steel were up by 2% each. Among losers, State Bank of India slid the most by 0.78% followed by Maruti Suzuki India that fell 0.45% and Hero Honda Motors that lost 0.14% for the day. Viewing volumes On turnover front, IFCI was the most traded shares with over 1.98 crore shares changing hands on the BSE followed by Suzlon Energy (1.45 crore shares), Unitech (1.13 crore shares), HDIL (0.35 crore shares) and Ispat (0.34 crore shares).
