 Market Commentary
Sensex below 13800
Weak global cues spurred across-the-board selling with Sensex 400 points down.
With Dow Jones down and Asian markets opening weak, the Sensex lost 2.83% for the day. Starting the day with a negative note (at 14039) the Indian stock market could not
recover, as sentiment turned extremely bearish as day passed. A sharp fall in heavy weights, correction in realty and drop in capital goods (CG), metal, banking and power stocks dragged the Sensex around 13700 mark in afternoon to touch the day's low of 13702, down 468 points. The index closed the day 401 points down at 13769 whereas Nifty shed 123 points to close at 4079.

The market breadth was extremely weak. Of the 2,602 stocks traded on BSE 1,980 stocks declined, whereas 563 stocks advanced. 59 stocks ended unchanged. All the 13 sectoral indices were hammered. BSE Realty led the slump and closed weaker by 8.47% followed by BSE CG (down 5.05%), BSE Metal (down 4.22%) and BSE Bankex (down 4.09%).

Of the 30 scrips that make Sensex only six ended positive for the day. Of the major losers Tata Steel slumped 8.93% to Rs362.55, Sterlite Industries shed 8.38% to Rs546.05, DLF declined 7.68% to Rs284.45, Reliance Infrastructure lost 7.04% at Rs1,074.70, Larsen & Toubro shed 5.84% at Rs1,413.15, ICICI Bank fell 5.82% at Rs654.55, Jai Prakash Associates slipped by 5.58% at Rs194.45, Bharat Heavy Electricals plunged 4.19% at Rs2,046.70 and ONGC tumbled 3.89% to Rs1,009.15. Other blue chips also fell around 1-3% each. Among select gainers, ACC added 3.09% to Rs786, Maruti Suzuki India gained 2.13% at Rs1,102.95, Hero Honda moved up 1.51% to Rs1459.20 and Grasim Industries advanced 1.20% to Rs2,445.45. National Thermal Power Corporation and Tata Motors gained marginally.

Unitech was the most actively traded counter with volumes of over 3.62 crore shares on BSE followed by Cals Refineries (2.61 crore shares), Suzlon Energy (1.79 crore shares), Ispat Industries (1.25 crore shares) and Mahindra Satyam (1.24 crore shares).
