 Market Commentary
Sensex slips below 15000
Across-the-board selling pressure led by the consumer goods and auto stocks saw the Sensex shed 219 points for the day.
The slide continued for the second straight session, with the Sensex erasing gains of nearly 300 points gathered in the early trades and finally closing down over 1% at the end of the second session.
The related BSE sectoral indices also bore the brunt of the selling and tanked by around 1% each. However, the mood was extremely bullish in the first hour of the trading session. The Sensex, taking its cue from the positive global indices, resumed 60 points higher at 15125 and added another 244 points to touch an intra-day high of 15369. Thereafter, the Sensex eased in the late morning trades and continued moving southwards through the afternoon. Frantic selling towards the close saw the index nearly slipping below 14800 levels and touching the day's low of 14787. The Sensex finally ended 219 points down at 14843 while the Nifty shed 70 points to close at 4399.

The market breadth was weak, with the losers outnumbering the gainers in a ratio of 1.11:1. Of the 2,704 stocks traded on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1,374 stocks declined, 1,231 stocks advanced and 99 stocks ended unchanged. All the sectoral indices were hammered. Among the sectors, the BSE CG Index tanked 1.87% followed by BSE Auto Index (down 1.61%), BSE Power Index (down 1.60%), BSE IT Index (down 1.60%), BSE Teck Index (down 1.54%) and BSE Metal Index (down 1.45%).

Except ONGC, Sterlite Industries, DLF and NTPC, the remaining 26 Sensex stocks ended in the red. Among the major losers, HDFC tanked by 4.43% to Rs2,410.30, Hindalco tumbled by 3.44% to Rs85.50, Reliance Infra declined by 3.36% to Rs1,091.25, Grasim Industries plunged by 3.32% to Rs2,697.70, Tata Steel dropped by 3.27% to Rs398.30, JP Associates crumbled by 2.95% to Rs218.85, BHEL slumped by 2.89% to Rs2,150.90 and TCS fell by 2.42% to Rs465.85. RCom, ACC, Reliance Industries, Maruti, Bharti, Hero Honda, L&T, Wipro and ICICI Bank dropped by around 1% each. ONGC at Rs1,092.90, Sterlite Industries at Rs601.30, DLF at Rs346.20 and NTPC at Rs203.50, however, ended with modest gains.

Over 2.38 crore shares of Unitech changed hands on the BSE followed by Satyam Computer Services (2.17 crore shares), Suzlon Energy (1.97 crore shares), Ispat Industries (1.60 crore shares) and IFCI (1.10 crore shares).
